Is the Stock Market Open on Columbus Day 2026? Yes, but Bonds Are Closed

Is the stock market open on Columbus Day? Yes. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq trade normal hours on Columbus Day, Monday, October 12, 2026. The bond market is closed, however, and so are most banks.

Quick answer for Monday, October 12, 2026

  • Stocks (NYSE, Nasdaq): open, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET.
  • Bond market: closed (SIFMA full-close recommendation).
  • Banks and the Federal Reserve: closed.
  • Canada (TSX): closed for Thanksgiving.
  • Next stock market holiday: Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26.

Is the stock market open on Columbus Day 2026?

Yes, it is. Columbus Day is a federal holiday, but it is not a stock market holiday. The NYSE and Nasdaq only close on ten days a year, and Columbus Day is not one of them. As a result, stocks, ETFs and stock options trade as usual.

Extended hours also run on a normal schedule. In addition, futures on the CME trade on Columbus Day, although some interest-rate products may be quiet while the cash bond market is shut.

Why the stock market is open on Columbus Day but bonds aren’t

Stock exchanges set their own holiday calendars. The bond market, on the other hand, follows recommendations from SIFMA, the main bond industry group. SIFMA generally lines up with bank holidays, because bond trading depends heavily on banks and on the Federal Reserve’s payment systems.

That split has one practical effect. Because banks are closed, Monday does not count as a settlement day. So, if you sold shares on Friday, October 9, the cash settles on Tuesday, October 13 instead of Monday.

Trading tips when the stock market is open on Columbus Day

  • Expect lighter volume. With bonds, Canada and Japan all closed, fewer traders are active. Thin markets can make prices move more than usual.
  • Plan cash transfers. Bank transfers into your brokerage account won’t process until Tuesday.
  • Watch rates on Tuesday. Bond prices can catch up quickly when the bond market reopens on October 13.

Canadian Thanksgiving: the TSX is closed

In Canada, October 12, 2026 is Thanksgiving Day. TMX Group has confirmed that the Toronto Stock Exchange, TSX Venture Exchange, TSX Alpha Exchange and Montréal Exchange are closed. Canadian trading resumes on Tuesday, October 13. Canadian investors can still trade US-listed stocks on Monday, however, because the NYSE and Nasdaq are open.

A short history of Columbus Day

Columbus Day became a national holiday in 1937. Since 1971, it has been held on the second Monday of October. Today, many states and cities also mark the day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Either way, the answer for investors is the same: the stock market is open on Columbus Day, and the bond market is closed.
