Does Your BC Politician Pass the Smell Test?

How do you know whether your politician is genuinely working for you, or simply working to protect their own interests? Apply the smell test.  See if there isn’t a stink you might remove by just voting a different way,  Celine has been working on removing bad smells professionally me I’m just a amature.

1. Follow the money. Ask who benefits financially from the politician’s decisions. Are government contracts going to connected companies? Are lobbyists getting special access? Are donations, business relationships, and conflicts of interest properly disclosed? Follow the evidence rather than simply accepting their explanations.

2. Compare promises with performance. Politicians are excellent at making promises during election campaigns. The real test is what happens afterward. Did they deliver? Did costs rise beyond expectations? Did the promised improvements materialize? Compare their public statements with voting records, budgets, contracts, and measurable results.

3. Watch how they answer difficult questions. A politician who consistently avoids straightforward questions, changes the subject, attacks the person asking, or gives contradictory explanations deserves closer scrutiny. An honest politician should be able to explain decisions clearly and support claims with evidence.

4. Apply the same standard to everyone. Don’t excuse questionable behaviour simply because a politician belongs to your preferred party. If you would condemn the same conduct from an opposing politician, it deserves equal scrutiny from your own side.

5. Look for accountability. Does your representative admit mistakes, publish relevant information, welcome independent investigations, and accept responsibility? Or do they blame everyone else while avoiding consequences?

6. Check the facts before reaching a verdict. An accusation is not proof, and a suspicious-looking situation is not automatically evidence of wrongdoing. Consult primary documents, credible reporting, official records, and independent oversight findings.

Here’s the bottom line: Your politician doesn’t pass the smell test simply because you like their speeches, promises, or party. They pass when their actions, explanations, financial dealings, and results stand up to independent scrutiny.

You pay taxes. You lend elected officials your authority. They owe you transparency and accountability.

Don’t just listen to what they say. Check what they do.
