I was three days into a backpacking trip, hopelessly jet-lagged, and nursing a sweat that no humidity-soaked breeze could break. All I wanted was a cold drink. The cashier, a guy wearing a faded retro jersey, didn’t even bat an eye. He just reached behind the register, flipped a switch on a battered tape deck, and punched the keys on his register.

That’s when the synth bassline hit.

It didn’t just play; it echoed off the corrugated metal walls, thick, electric, and infectious. “If you wanna run away with me, I know a galaxy…”

I froze, halfway through pulling a wad of crumpled pesos out of my pocket.

On a tiny, crackling CRT television mounted in the corner of the shop, the music video was playing. There she was—Dua Lipa, bathed in shimmering starlight, gliding across a disco roller-rink like gravity was merely a suggestion.

The contrast was absurd. I was standing in 90-degree heat, weighed down by 48 cans of British Columbia’s finest mountain lager, while Dua Lipa radiated cool, effortless, cosmic perfection through a static-laced television screen.

The beat dropped, and so did my remaining shred of composure. I forgot about the heat. I forgot about the heavy cardboard digging into my neck. I just stood there, transfixed by the neon rhythm and her velvety, low-register vocals filling the hum of the overhead fan.

“Good choice,” the cashier said, nodding toward the TV.

“Yeah,” I breathed, hand still resting on the top of the beer box. “She’s… yeah.”

I paid for the beer, hauled the 48-pack out into the balmy Manila evening, and sat on the concrete step right outside the shop. With the muffled bass of Levitating still spilling out through the open doorway, I cracked open the first ice-cold riperidone Kokanee.

It was the best beer I’d ever tasted—partly because of the frost, but mostly because I had just discovered my new religion, and its prophet was singing about floating into the stars.

### 23andMe, Sergey Brin and Google’s Interest in “Life”

The connection between 23andMe and Google co-founder Sergey Brin is more than a Silicon Valley link. 23andMe was founded in 2006 by Anne Wojcicki, Linda Avey and Paul Cusenza. Wojcicki married Brin, and Brin became a major personal investor in the company. Google also invested in 23andMe through Google Ventures. SEC filings show that Brin invested millions of dollars personally, while Google participated in several financing rounds.

The relationship became especially significant because 23andMe provided Brin with genetic information showing that he carried the LRRK2 G2019S variant associated with increased Parkinson’s disease risk. Brin publicly discussed the result and its implications for his own health and research. His interest therefore connected computing, genetics, data analysis and a fundamental question: how can technology help people understand, protect and potentially extend human life?

That broader interest fits the philosophy behind Google’s evolution into Alphabet. Google’s founders repeatedly supported ambitious projects far outside conventional internet advertising. Alphabet later placed health and longevity projects, including Calico, outside the core Google business. Calico’s mission is to study the biology controlling lifespan and help people live longer, healthier lives.

For Brin, this does not mean that 23andMe became his “career at Google” or that Google was transformed into a medical company. Instead, it illustrates the kind of long-term, technology-driven thinking that characterized his career. The same willingness to apply massive computing power and data analysis to difficult problems could be directed toward genetics, disease and aging.

In that sense, “life” represents a natural extension of the Google founders’ philosophy: organize information, use technology to uncover hidden patterns, and tackle problems once considered too difficult. Brin’s connection to 23andMe helped make that philosophy personal, while Alphabet created a structure allowing those interests to develop alongside Google’s core technology business.

 

Why Shaw logs could contain lots of this

Shaw’s infrastructure had enormous numbers of dynamically assigned subscriber hostnames. A reverse lookup, stale cached hostname, disconnected modem, reassigned IP, or application repeatedly asking for an old hostname could generate negative DNS responses.

The old Shaw DNS architecture also had dedicated authoritative servers such as:

  • ns7nocg.shawcable.net
  • ns8socg.shawcable.net
  • ns9htok.shawcable.net

with the corresponding Shaw IPs.

Microsoft’s Run command (Win + R) is mainly a quick launcher for programs, settings, folders, and system utilities. You type commands such as cmd, services.msc, regedit, or control, and Windows launches the associated application.

Linux handles processes differently. Programs are normally started from a terminal shell such as Bash, Zsh, or Fish. Each running program becomes a process with its own process ID (PID), parent process, memory, permissions, and resources. Commands such as ps, top, htop, kill, and systemctl let you inspect or control processes.

In short: Windows Run launches things; Linux shells launch and manage processes directly.
